Maya Jama Is British Vogue’s August 2023 Cover Star

It’s rare that a personality explodes into the spotlight who encapsulates something more than just straightforward beauty, winning style or captivating charisma – who instead becomes a lightning rod of sorts; a magical combination of all three. In Britain right now, that cosmic girl is Maya Jama.

Millions know her for her work on reality television, her otherworldliness beamed on to screens and smartphones across the land, her relatable banter, fashion choices and self-care rituals all delivered with signature authenticity. Yet Maya has done something truly unusual. She has transcended the world of traditional TV stars and influencers, of Instagram grids and the rough and tumble of the tabloids, to become something even more powerful: the girl of the moment.

As the planet wakes up to her charms, with fashion houses falling in love with her too, this month Maya features on the cover of Vogue photographed by the one and only Steven Meisel. On set with myself and Maya some weeks ago in New York, Meisel became as bewitched as the rest of us by the Jama magic and the resulting images fill my heart with happiness. You won’t have a better night out than with Maya, as writer Raven Smith discovers, but her rise also says something profound about modern Britain. Her mixed heritage, her humour, her kindness and her ability to connect with women and men or indeed anyone who comes into her orbit is a joy to behold.
