Michaela Coel Is British Vogue’s September Cover Star
September is always kind of a big deal in the fashion calendar, though this year that big agenda-setting energy is about to go super huge. The creative directors limbering up to unveil their first collections for major fashion houses this season are almost impossible to name without taking a breath: Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, Louise Trotter at Bottega Veneta, Pierpaolo Piccioli at Balenciaga and Jonathan Anderson’s womenswear debut for Dior – and the list goes on.
Around the Vogue offices, us fashion nerds have been anticipating the moment for quite some time. In fact we’ve taken to calling it Super September, just because a moment this major feels like it deserves its own tagline. Writer Maya Singer, who sat down with designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for this issue, describes it as “fashion’s great reshuffle”. As the newly appointed creative directors of Loewe, McCollough and Hernandez are somewhat outliers in this new world order, having never worked at a luxury house before – the duo built their Proenza Schouler brand straight out of fashion school in New York 23 years ago. Still, often it’s that outsider perspective, the ability to look at a thing with completely fresh eyes from the inside out, that ignites a delightful creative spark.
Laura Weir, the new CEO of the British Fashion Council, has that kind of fire in her belly too. With fewer than a hundred days on the job, she set about making radical changes to inject some vitality into the scene closer to home. At an event held within the translucent facade of architect Marina Tabassum’s pavilion at the Serpentine in July, she announced that the BFC would be waiving fees for designers showing at London Fashion Week, further investing in scholarship funding and much more – as you’ll discover, that’s just for starters. Her approach, in a nutshell, is reassuringly bold and optimistic: “Let’s be limitless.”
