Julia Roberts Is British Vogue’s February 2024 Cover Star

They say good things come to those who wait, and oh, how we waited for this one – her whole career, in fact. This month, with no little sense of occasion, I’m delighted to say that Julia Roberts is making her debut on the cover of British Vogue.

At the tail end of last year, she descended from the fame stratosphere to London. Well, I say stratosphere… In truth, Julia, 56, lives with her husband and children, and can be found most days wearing overalls and a smile hundreds of miles, and many lightyears, away from the cut and thrust of Hollywood.

For the photographs, I knew I wanted to do something special, though, and so Vogue took over The Penthouse at Claridge’s for the first (and likely only) time such a shoot will happen there. Over the course of many wonderful hours, filled with laughter, ’80s soft rock hits and high fashion, photographer Lachlan Bailey and I went to work with a clear brief in our minds: to encapsulate the magic of Julia.

And she is magical. Smart as hell, witty as all get-out and as warm as she is determined to be true to herself in all circumstances. There’s a reason she became America’s – nay, the world’s – sweetheart all those years ago and continues to connect, uplift and beguile on screen like few before or since. We all feel like we know Julia. That is her power. Writer and director Richard Curtis really does know her, however, and so we dispatched the king of romcoms to meet their queen for a revealing and hilarious tête-à-tête.

Meanwhile, February brings with it our fashion editors’ first take on the spring/summer season ahead. Photographer Scott Trindle captures the attention-grabbing grace of the new voluminous silhouettes, while Jack Davison is in an artful, free-spirited mood. It’s all change, especially at the house of Gucci, where designer Sabato De Sarno recently arrived as creative director, a move he discusses in an exclusive interview. A great season lies just around the corner.
